Description
The Canatra Valley is an enchanting setting close to the better known Castelluccio Plains and Mt. Vettore. Barely touched by tourism, yet the features of great landscape and environmental interest of the Canatra Valley, on the other hand, are well-known to mountain lovers.
In the initial section (altitude of around 1,700 m), the valley head, carved by different valleys and pits, is steep but entirely covered by forest; descending towards the valley, to a height of 1,367 m, the slopes are still steep and carved, the valley bottom is narrow, even if diverse crops have been planted and maintained on the thin alluvial strip. From an altitude of 1,367m to Perduto Plain the Canatra Valley widens, though maintaining the very steep slopes, and flattens; the extended valley bottom is occupied by various crops: herbs, hayfields, meadows of rye and emmer, lentils.
The vegetational diversification of the slopes remains constant: natural pasture on Mount Lieto and Beech wood on the slopes of Mount Veletta-Roggio di Croce.
